Compare every grade

Every standard and grade side by side — head marking, size range, and the headline strength values. This is the page to bookmark.

Source: compiled from each grade's governing standard (SAE J429, ASTM A307/A449/A354). Verify against the current standard before relying on these values for design.

Values shown are for the listed size range and in psi. Several grades step down at larger diameters (and A354 BD carries a tensile range) — see each standard's page for the full size-by-size breakdown. A307 Grades A and B have no specified yield.

Quick equivalents
A307 ≈ Grade 2

The general-purpose carbon-steel option — the ASTM stand-in for a low-strength SAE Grade 2.

A449 ≈ Grade 5

Same strength as Grade 5 (and A325), but across a wider diameter range and any configuration.

A354 BD ≈ Grade 8

Alloy-steel high strength, equal to A490 — the ASTM route to Grade 8-class properties.
